Pediatric Intensive Care Unit

The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at CHRISTUS Schumpert Health System provides complete medical and surgical care to critically ill infants and children.

The PICU nursing staff consists of registered nurses specifically trained in pediatric advanced life support (PALS) and experienced in the care of critically ill children. These nurses provide 24-hour nursing care at a one-to-one or one-to-two nurse-patient ratio.

An integral part of the PICU service is the sophisticated patient support system offered by CHRISTUS Schumpert Health System. This system includes three specially equipped ground transport vehicles, as well as helicopter air transport. Rapid transport of critically ill patients is accomplished using CHRISTUS Schumpert's Life Air Rescue helicopter. The helicopter is available 24 hours a day and operates within a 150-mile radius of Shreveport and Bossier City.

The CHRISTUS Schumpert Health System PICU is prepared to respond quickly and efficiently to calls for transport and assistance from area hospitals and physicians. One call from the referring physician or agency to the PICU will put them in touch with a member of the PICU who will begin the transport process immediately. Once the child has been transported to the PICU, the staff will keep the referring physician informed of the child's condition and progress.
